SINGAPORE – A technical problem with Singapore’s SimplyGo fare system briefly left thousands of early-morning commuters without a discount, affecting an average of 210,000 journeys each day on Aug. 20 and 21. According to The Straits Times, the issue was caused by a configuration error that prevented the morning pre-peak fare discount from being applied to SimplyGo EZ-Link and bank card transactions.

SimplyGo said the problem has now been resolved, with eligible commuters seeing the correct fares reflected in the SimplyGo app. The company emphasized that the amount displayed after the correction is the fare that will ultimately be charged. “This is the fare which will be charged,” SimplyGo said in a statement posted on Facebook on Aug. 21.

The affected discount is part of Singapore’s Morning Pre-Peak Fare Scheme, which was introduced in 2017 to encourage commuters to travel before the busiest period of the morning. Passengers who tap into any rail station before 7.45am on weekdays, excluding public holidays, can receive savings of up to 50 cents. The actual discount is capped at either 50 cents or the cost of the train journey, whichever is lower.

Some commuters noticed the problem before SimplyGo publicly addressed it. Posts on Reddit described passengers tapping in before the 7.45am deadline but discovering that the expected discount was missing from their transactions. One commuter said they had entered a station at 7.44am, only to find that the fare reduction had not appeared, even though the fare gates indicated that the pre-peak scheme was still active. Others reported seeing full fares charged on both affected days.

The incident affected both SimplyGo EZ-Link users and passengers paying with bank cards. SimplyGo, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, was formed in 2024 through the merger of EZ-Link and TransitLink.

The company apologized for the inconvenience and thanked commuters for their patience and understanding. Passengers who still have questions about their fares can contact SimplyGo’s hotline at 6883-5048 between 8am and 6pm daily, excluding public holidays.

With the configuration problem corrected, commuters returning to their early-morning routines can once again expect eligible discounts to appear in the app, turning a small technical hiccup into a reminder that even the most routine tap of a transit card depends on a surprisingly complex digital system.
