SINGAPORE – A seemingly brief interaction at a Singapore food court has escalated into a police investigation after a 73-year-old man was allegedly shoved to the ground following an encounter with a young girl. According to The Straits Times, the incident happened at about 4.40pm on Aug. 15 at 50 East Coast Road, where the elderly man was walking through the premises when he reached out and patted a girl on the head.
Security footage shared online shows the elderly man moving through the coffee shop while using nearby tables for support. As he passed the girl, he briefly touched her head. A woman sitting with the child appeared to push his hand away, after which a man who had previously left the table returned and confronted him.
The confrontation quickly became physical. The footage shows the man pushing the elderly patron, causing him to fall to the floor. The elderly man’s family later said he had difficulty walking and developed significant back pain following the incident. The family also appealed on social media for information about the man involved.
Police confirmed that a report had been lodged and said they had identified a 40-year-old man in connection with the alleged assault. Investigations are ongoing. Authorities also urged members of the public not to speculate about what happened and to allow investigators to establish the facts.

The incident was initially brought to wider attention through a Facebook post from Bei-Ing Wanton Noodle, whose user said the elderly man was his father. The family said the younger man later apologised and offered the elderly man a drink after the confrontation.
The elderly man, identified by CNA as Yeo Song Khoon, later spoke about the incident and explained that he had reached out because he found the girl “very adorable.” He said, “Old people like to pat young children’s heads.” Yeo, who has sold wonton noodles for around four decades, also said he did not want to “cause any trouble.”
The episode has since generated considerable discussion online, particularly over the boundaries of interacting with children and how adults should respond when they feel those boundaries have been crossed. Yet with police inquiries still underway, authorities have stressed that the circumstances should not be judged solely from circulating footage or social-media accounts.
The investigation will now determine what happened before, during and after the confrontation, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
