The assault has led to widespread chaos, overwhelming local healthcare facilities and prompting urgent appeals for international assistance.
The M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, initiated their attack on Goma in late January 2025, breaching a previously declared ceasefire. They have since seized control of the city and are advancing toward Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province. The International Criminal Court is closely monitoring the situation due to the significant number of casualties, with nearly 3,000 bodies collected so far amid widespread chaos and mass burials.
Reported from the CNN, many hospitals in Goma are struggling to cope with the influx of patients suffering from gunshot and shrapnel wounds. Medical facilities such as Kyeshero and Virunga are overwhelmed, facing severe shortages of blood supplies and essential medical equipment.
