TECH – Qualcomm has introduced its Snapdragon G-Series platform, specifically designed to enhance performance in handheld gaming consoles. This new lineup comprises three distinct tiers: Snapdragon G1 Gen 1, Snapdragon G2 Gen 1, and Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, each catering to different gaming needs. The Snapdragon G1 Gen 1 is tailored for fanless game streaming devices, offering over 10 hours of battery life. It features an eight-core Kryo CPU, an Adreno A11 GPU, Wi-Fi 5 connectivity, and Bluetooth 5.0 support, handling up to 720p resolution at 60 frames per second (fps).
Moving up, the Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 targets both mobile and cloud gaming handhelds. It maintains the eight-core Kryo CPU but upgrades to an Adreno A21 GPU. Enhanced connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6/6E and 5G, thanks to the Snapdragon X62 5G modem, supporting Full HD+ displays at up to 144 fps. At the top tier, the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 is designed for flagship handhelds aiming to deliver PC-level gaming experiences on the go. It boasts an eight-core Kryo CPU with a 30% performance increase over its predecessor and a new Adreno A32 GPU that doubles the graphics performance. Additional features include ray tracing capabilities, Wi-Fi 7, 5G connectivity, support for Full HD+ displays at up to 144 fps, PCIe Gen 4 SSD support, and stereo haptics.

Several manufacturers are collaborating with Qualcomm to integrate these new chipsets into upcoming devices. Notably, Ayaneo is developing the Pocket S2, powered by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, which promises high performance without significant heat generation. Another innovative device, the OneXSugar Sugar 1, utilizes the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 and features a unique design that transforms from a single-screen handheld to a dual-screen setup, reminiscent of the Nintendo DS.
This strategic move by Qualcomm positions the company to compete with established players like Intel and AMD in the handheld gaming market.
