TECH – In a groundbreaking move, Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics is set to host the world’s first boxing match between humanoid robots, marking a significant milestone in the integration of robotics into sports and entertainment. The event, titled “Unitree Iron Fist King: Awakening,” is scheduled to be live-streamed on May 25, 2025, showcasing the advanced capabilities of Unitree’s humanoid robots.

The main contenders for this historic match are expected to be Unitree’s G1 robots. Standing at 1.32 meters and weighing 35 kilograms, the G1 model is equipped with sophisticated motion control systems and has demonstrated impressive agility in recent demonstrations. In promotional videos, the G1 has been seen sparring with human opponents, executing kung fu moves, and performing complex maneuvers such as 720-degree spinning kicks.

These demonstrations were part of a recent event at a school in Hangzhou City, where Unitree’s robots showcased their combat skills and endurance by performing a 40-minute jogging session on the school’s basketball court. The event served as both a live demonstration for students and a critical test ahead of the upcoming boxing match.

Chu Yang, a member of Unitree’s marketing team, explained that the robots operate in a human-machine collaborative manner. “The most common way is that the controller uses a simple controller to control the robot’s movements. We will reveal two other newly developed control modes on the match,” he stated, hinting at further innovations to be unveiled during the event.

Unitree’s advancements in humanoid robotics are part of China’s broader push to become a leader in the field. The country’s robust electronics and electric vehicle supply chains have provided a strong foundation for rapid development in robotics. Government support through funding and industrial policies has further accelerated progress, with initiatives like Shanghai’s state-backed training facility for humanoids exemplifying this commitment.

The upcoming robot boxing match not only highlights the technical prowess of Unitree’s humanoid robots but also reflects the growing intersection of technology and entertainment. As humanoid robots become more integrated into various aspects of society, events like this serve as a testament to the potential of robotics to transform traditional domains.
