OpenAI Launches GPT-4.1 with Enhanced Coding and Context Capabilities

Published

on

TECH – OpenAI has officially released its latest AI model series, GPT-4.1, featuring significant improvements in coding performance and long-context understanding. The series includes three variants: GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Mini, and GPT-4.1 Nano, all accessible via OpenAI’s API. These models are designed to excel in tasks requiring complex instruction following and extended context processing.

A standout feature of GPT-4.1 is its expanded context window, now supporting up to one million tokens. This enhancement allows the models to process and understand significantly larger datasets, making them more effective for applications involving extensive documents or codebases. In performance benchmarks, GPT-4.1 demonstrates a 26.6% improvement over its predecessor, GPT-4.5, particularly in coding tasks. The Mini and Nano versions offer more cost-effective solutions, with GPT-4.1 Mini reducing operational costs by 83% compared to the standard model, and GPT-4.1 Nano providing the fastest and most economical option for lightweight tasks like classification and autocompletion.

Pricing for the GPT-4.1 series is structured to accommodate various needs: the standard model is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $8 per million output tokens, while the Mini and Nano versions are available at lower rates, starting from $0.10 to $1.60 per million tokens. OpenAI has also announced the deprecation of GPT-4.5 in the API, citing the superior efficiency and performance of the GPT-4.1 models. While GPT-4.1 is currently available exclusively through the API, OpenAI plans to integrate many of its features into ChatGPT, enhancing the platform’s capabilities over time.

The release of the GPT-4.1 series marks a significant step forward in AI development, offering developers and businesses more powerful tools for a range of applications, from software development to data analysis. As OpenAI continues to refine its models, users can expect ongoing improvements in performance and efficiency.
