TECH – JetZero Inc., a California-based aerospace startup, is on track to revolutionize commercial aviation with its innovative blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft, aiming for a full-scale demonstrator flight by late 2027. This design merges the wings and fuselage into a single lifting surface, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and offering substantial fuel savings.
Florentina Viscotchi, JetZero’s head of engineering, announced that the company has completed approximately half of the critical milestones in developing the demonstrator aircraft. “We are very confident that we are on track for a first flight by the end of 2027, as initially projected,” she stated at the company’s Long Beach headquarters.
The BWB design promises up to 50% reduction in fuel consumption compared to traditional aircraft, utilizing existing engine technologies. This efficiency is achieved through reduced aerodynamic drag and weight, as the design eliminates the need for tail surfaces and integrates the fuselage and wings seamlessly.
JetZero’s ambitious project has garnered significant support, including a $235 million investment from the U.S. Air Force to develop the BWB demonstrator. Collaborations with aerospace giants like Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites further bolster the project’s development.

The aircraft is designed to accommodate up to 250 passengers, offering a spacious cabin layout with wider aisles and increased overhead storage. The engines are mounted atop the fuselage, reducing cabin noise and enhancing passenger comfort.
JetZero’s BWB aircraft is also being developed with sustainability in mind. The design is compatible with 100% sustainable aviation fuel and has the potential to integrate hydrogen propulsion systems in the future, aligning with the aviation industry’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Airlines are taking note of JetZero’s innovative approach. Delta Air Lines, for instance, is collaborating with JetZero to provide operational expertise and cabin design input, aiming to bring the BWB aircraft into commercial service.
As JetZero progresses toward its 2027 flight goal, the aerospace industry watches closely, anticipating a potential paradigm shift in aircraft design and efficiency.
