Huawei Challenges Nvidia Amid US Export Bans

INTERNATIONAL – Huawei Technologies is intensifying its efforts in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip sector, aiming to rival Nvidia’s dominance. The Chinese tech giant is developing the Ascend 910D, an advanced AI processor designed to compete with Nvidia’s high-end offerings like the H100. This development comes in the wake of the U.S. government’s decision to tighten export restrictions on AI chips to China, including Nvidia’s H20 processor.

The Ascend 910D is part of Huawei’s broader strategy to achieve technological self-sufficiency amid escalating U.S.-China trade tensions. The company has already approached several Chinese tech firms to test the new chip, which is in the early stages of development. Huawei plans to ship over 800,000 units of its previous models, the Ascend 910B and 910C, to domestic clients like ByteDance in 2025.

Nvidia, on the other hand, is facing significant challenges due to the U.S. export bans. The company’s stock has declined by nearly 4%, and it anticipates a $5.5 billion loss in the first quarter of 2025. Analysts estimate that the export restrictions could cut Nvidia’s revenue by as much as $16 billion this year.

The U.S. government’s decision to block the proposed acquisition of a majority stake in Income Insurance by German insurer Allianz has also raised concerns about foreign investments in strategic sectors. NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng acknowledged the public’s apprehensions, stating, “We hear you. We understand your concerns. We will learn the right lessons and do better.”

Huawei’s advancements in AI chip development underscore China’s resilience in the semiconductor industry and its push for technological independence. The company’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to reduce reliance on foreign technology and strengthen its position in the global AI market.
