TECH – Volvo Trucks has announced the forthcoming availability of its latest all-electric heavy goods vehicle (HGV), the FH Aero Electric. This new model boasts a substantial range of up to 600 kilometers (approximately 373 miles) on a single charge and is capable of hauling loads up to 46 tonnes (about 51 US tons), subject to regional regulations.

The FH Aero Electric features a 6×2 tractor trailer configuration, an upgrade from the previous 4×2 model, effectively doubling its range. Equipped with a battery capacity of up to 780 kilowatt-hours (kWh), the truck supports both the emerging Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and up to 350kW Combined Charging System (CCS), allowing for a 20% to 80% charge in as little as 40 minutes.

Initially, Volvo planned to open orders for the FH Aero Electric in the latter half of 2025. However, the company has updated this timeline, with orders now set to commence in the last quarter of 2025. Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, emphasized that this vehicle offers an excellent solution for transport companies with high annual mileage and a strong commitment to reducing CO2 emissions.

This development aligns with Volvo’s broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle offerings and support the transition to sustainable transportation solutions. The FH Aero Electric is designed to meet the needs of long-haul transport, providing both extended range and substantial load capacity.

Despite the advancements, Volvo acknowledges the challenges in the current market, including the higher costs of electric trucks compared to diesel counterparts and the need for supportive policies to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. The company continues to advocate for political action to facilitate this transition.
