TECH – Indonesia is revolutionizing poultry farming with a new Internet of Things (IoT) system tailored for broiler chicken coops. This system, developed through a partnership between Telkomsel’s Indico subsidiary and SMK Telkom Malang, equips coops with affordable yet powerful sensors to monitor environmental conditions—dramatically improving productivity and animal welfare.

Indico’s Digital Food Ecosystem (DFE) team collaborated with SMK Telkom Malang students to design a sensor array that accurately tracks four key parameters: temperature, humidity, ammonia levels, and wind velocity. By feeding real-time data to a centralized dashboard, farm managers can make precise decisions—suggesting, for instance, when to power fans or heaters—helping to maintain optimal living environments for the broilers .

“Through these sensors, we aim not only to automate conditions but also to provide a data-driven approach to coop management,” explained Andi Kristianto, CEO of Indico. He emphasized the initiative’s focus on sustainability, local talent, and relevant technological solutions.

The system, built entirely in-house by Indico’s R&D unit and assembled in collaboration with vocational students, represents an affordable solution. Unlike pricey alternatives like TempTron, it enables small-scale farmers to access cutting-edge technology without significant investment.

Other academic entities across Indonesia have embraced similar technology. Brawijaya University developed a comparable IoT setup comprising microcontrollers and mobile-connected sensor probes, deployed in Malang Regency’s Karangploso and Singosari districts. This version updates farmers every few minutes, enabling quick actions to prevent heat stress and maintain chicken health.

The broader benefits of these smart coops are well-documented: improved bird health, enhanced growth rates, and a lower risk of disease. Industry tests at universities show that real-time environmental control directly correlates with productivity gains.

With features such as live data tracking, automatic environmental control, and mobile integration, these smart systems deliver both convenience and efficiency to poultry farmers.
