TECH – Talking to artificial intelligence can sometimes feel strangely impersonal. You ask a question into empty space or type into a blank interface, and a response appears without any sense of presence. Designers and engineers have long searched for ways to soften that experience, and a new concept robot from Samsung aims to do exactly that. According to Yanko Design, Samsung Display introduced the AI Mini PetBot, a compact robotic companion designed to make AI interactions feel warmer and more human.
The small device was showcased during MWC 2026 in Barcelona, where it drew attention for its charming and expressive design. At the heart of the robot sits a 1.34-inch circular OLED display that acts as its “face.” Instead of staring at a static screen while the system processes commands, users see animated expressions that respond to voice or touch input. The screen can display blinking eyes, shifting emotions, and subtle visual reactions that give the impression of a living companion rather than a silent machine.
This idea reflects a broader movement in robotics: giving AI a visible personality so people feel more comfortable interacting with it. Speaking to a device that can “look back” creates a psychological shift. The robot becomes less like a tool and more like a companion sitting on the desk beside you. As Yanko Design explains, the display’s OLED technology allows deep blacks and smooth gradients, making even small animated expressions appear vivid and lifelike despite the tiny screen size.

The Mini PetBot is not the first attempt to create a desktop AI companion. Similar devices such as EMO from LivingAI, Eilik from Energize Lab, and Loona from KEYi Tech have explored the same concept, each offering its own personality and interactive behaviors. The growing popularity of these robots shows that many users prefer AI systems that feel approachable rather than purely functional.
Still, the Mini PetBot itself remains a concept prototype rather than a commercial product. Samsung Display presented it primarily as a demonstration of what its circular OLED technology can enable in future devices. In the same exhibition space, the company also revealed other experimental displays, highlighting how screens can become expressive elements in interactive gadgets.
Looked at from another angle, the little robot hints at a broader vision for artificial intelligence design. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, giving machines a face—or even a hint of personality—may help bridge the emotional gap between humans and technology, turning cold digital interactions into something a bit more relatable.
