TECH – China is reportedly advancing a new type of compact microwave weapon designed to disable satellite communications systems including SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, in a move that marks a potentially significant escalation in electronic warfare capabilities, according to reporting by IDN Financials and broader defense analysts. The system under development is tailored for battlefield use against space-based networks that have become integral to military command, communication and navigation, sparking fresh debate about how future wars may be fought beyond traditional air and ground combat.

At the heart of this effort is a high-power microwave (HPM) weapon that can be mounted on land vehicles, ships, or possibly deployed from airborne platforms, making it far more mobile and tactical than larger electronic warfare systems previously fielded. Unlike conventional anti-satellite missiles, which physically destroy hardware in orbit, a microwave weapon uses concentrated bursts of electromagnetic energy to disrupt or destroy sensitive electronic components aboard satellites or the ground stations that support them. Such technology can “kill” a system without creating space debris — an advantage in the increasingly congested orbital environment where debris from downed satellites poses hazards to all space traffic.

China’s interest in this area reflects broader strategic concerns about the growing reliance of advanced militaries — particularly the United States and its partners — on satellite networks like Starlink, which provide resilient global broadband and positioning services.

In recent years, Starlink terminals have been used in conflict zones for communication where terrestrial networks were lacking, and their ubiquity has made them both strategically valuable and potentially vulnerable targets.

According to some military analysts tracking Chinese defense developments, the microwave weapon under development could be tuned to specific frequency ranges used by satellite constellations, making it possible to temporarily or permanently blind or degrade communications without firing a single projectile into space. Another expert noted that traditional kinetic anti-satellite attacks can generate thousands of fragments that threaten all orbital assets, whereas a directed energy system could “neutralize” electronics with less collateral damage — though the effects on civilian use satellites remain a matter of concern.

China hasn’t officially confirmed the weapon’s existence or specific specifications, but the broader pattern of military modernization and investment in electromagnetic and cyber warfare capabilities suggests these efforts are part of a larger push to achieve strategic edge in future conflicts. This development also highlights growing tensions between major powers over space dominance, where electronic attacks could become as decisive as missile strikes. As one adviser put it, “Space networks aren’t just infrastructure — in future wars they’re a battlefield themselves,” capturing how intertwined space technology and national security have become.
