TECH – BMW has advanced its manufacturing automation by deploying Figure 02 humanoid robots at its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility. This initiative aligns with BMW’s iFACTORY strategy, aiming to modernize production through smart technologies. Developed by California-based startup Figure AI, the Figure 02 robots are designed to perform tasks traditionally handled by humans. In recent trials, these robots have demonstrated capabilities such as retrieving metal parts from mobile shelves and placing them onto welding fixtures with precision.
The Figure 02 model represents a significant upgrade from its predecessor, featuring enhanced dexterity and improved processing power. Notably, the robot has achieved a 400% increase in operational speed and a sevenfold improvement in task success rate. Figure AI, founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock, has garnered substantial investment, including a $675 million funding round led by industry giants such as OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Jeff Bezos.

This financial backing has propelled the company’s valuation to $2.6 billion. Into BMW’s production line marks a pivotal moment in automotive manufacturing. By automating repetitive and ergonomically challenging tasks, BMW aims to enhance efficiency and reduce the physical strain on human workers.
While the Figure 02 robots are currently in the trial phase, their performance has been promising.
