Amazon Trials Humanoid Robots for Package Delivery

TECH – Amazon is advancing its delivery operations by testing humanoid robots designed to assist in package distribution. As reported from The Guardian on June 5, 2025, the tech giant is developing artificial intelligence software to power these robots, while collaborating with external manufacturers for the hardware components.

The company has established a specialized testing facility, referred to as a “humanoid park,” located in San Francisco. This indoor obstacle course, approximately the size of a coffee shop, simulates real-world environments to evaluate the robots’ navigation and delivery capabilities. Amazon envisions these robots operating alongside human drivers, potentially enhancing delivery efficiency by allowing simultaneous drop-offs at different addresses.

In preparation for broader deployment, Amazon has integrated one of its Rivian electric delivery vans into the testing zone. The plan includes field-testing the robots in actual neighborhoods to assess their performance in diverse and unpredictable settings. This initiative builds upon Amazon’s previous experiments with humanoid robots in warehouse environments, notably utilizing devices developed by Agility Robotics.

Experts acknowledge the rapid advancements in robotics but caution about the challenges of deploying such technology in complex real-world scenarios. Professor Subramanian Ramamoorthy, Chair of Robot Learning and Autonomy at the University of Edinburgh, highlighted the difficulties robots may face when encountering varied terrains, pets, and children. He noted that while controlled environments simplify tasks, real-world applications require robots to adapt to a multitude of unforeseen obstacles.

Amazon’s exploration of humanoid robots aligns with its broader strategy to integrate automation into its logistics network. The company’s subsidiary, Zoox, focuses on autonomous vehicle technology, indicating a comprehensive approach to revolutionizing delivery systems. Additionally, Amazon has introduced Vulcan, a warehouse robot equipped with tactile sensing, capable of handling approximately 75% of items, thereby reducing the physical strain on human workers.

While the integration of humanoid robots presents opportunities for increased efficiency, it also raises questions about the future of employment in the delivery sector. Amazon maintains that these technological advancements aim to augment human roles rather than replace them, emphasizing a collaborative approach between humans and machines.

As Amazon continues to innovate, the deployment of humanoid robots could signify a significant shift in the logistics and delivery industry, potentially setting new standards for efficiency and automation.
