SINGAPORE – Singapore’s air quality has slipped back into the unhealthy range, with haze once again affecting parts of the city-state after several days of more moderate readings. According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in central Singapore reached 102 at noon on Monday, September 14. Other parts of the island remained in the moderate range, with readings of 91 in the east and west, 82 in the south and 79 in the north.

The latest deterioration comes after Singapore experienced four consecutive days of moderate PSI levels. The National Environment Agency (NEA) said moderate to dense smoke plumes continued to be detected from fires in southern Sumatra and Kalimantan, with some of the smoke observed drifting toward Singapore. The agency has been issuing daily haze advisories since September 4, when the central region first crossed into unhealthy territory for the first time since 2023.

Under Singapore’s PSI system, readings from 101 to 200 are classified as unhealthy. The next categories are very unhealthy, covering 201 to 300, and hazardous for readings above 300. The index is intended to help residents understand pollution levels and plan outdoor activities accordingly, particularly when haze becomes more persistent.

Weather conditions across the region are expected to play an important role in how the situation develops. NEA said showers are forecast over parts of central and northern Sumatra, which could help reduce some fire activity there. However, drier conditions are expected to continue across Kalimantan as well as central and southern Sumatra. If fires persist in those areas, Singapore could continue to experience haze carried across the region.

The return of unhealthy readings also follows a broader deterioration in Indonesia’s fire situation. Reuters reported that wildfires had contributed to a sharp increase in respiratory infections in affected Indonesian provinces, while smoke and haze had spread into neighboring countries including Singapore and Malaysia.

For Singapore residents, the immediate concern is whether the latest rise will remain localized or spread across more regions. NEA’s 24-hour forecast placed Singapore’s air quality between the moderate and lower end of the unhealthy range, leaving outdoor conditions dependent on both wind patterns and the persistence of fires across Sumatra and Kalimantan.

TECH – Reaching orbit without a rocket sounds like science fiction, but that’s exactly the long-term bet a small volunteer-run group has been quietly pursuing for decades. According to Interesting Engineering, JP Aerospace has released new computer-generated images of its proposed Hazel vehicle, offering a fresh glimpse at an unconventional plan for getting people and cargo into space using lighter-than-air technology instead of traditional rocketry.

The newly shared visuals depict a dark, wing-shaped aircraft peeling away from a pair of massive balloons linked by a long structural truss, a high-altitude airship the company calls SuperTandem. Company president John Powell shared the images himself, describing them simply as “stills from the upcoming Hazel video” while confirming they’re concept animations rather than footage of an actual flight.

That framing matters, because Hazel exists purely on paper and in renderings for now. JP Aerospace, which brands itself “America’s Other Space Program,” has operated as an all-volunteer nonprofit under Powell’s leadership for more than four decades. Its broader Airship to Orbit concept imagines a slow, staged journey rather than a rocket’s violent sprint: a stratospheric airship would first carry passengers and cargo to a high-altitude waypoint called Dark Sky Station, after which a much larger orbital airship would use electric engines to gradually build up to orbital velocity, a process expected to take several days rather than minutes.

The group does have a track record worth noting. Back in October 2011, its Tandem airship, built from two balloons joined by a 30-foot carbon-fiber truss, climbed to 95,085 feet above Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, setting an altitude record for that class of vehicle at the time. Powell has said that earlier project cost around $30,000 and took five years to complete, reflecting the organization’s shoestring, grassroots approach. The team has also run roughly 200 smaller research flights carrying student payloads through its long-running PongSat program.

What hasn’t happened yet is any public confirmation that the larger orbital-class airships central to the whole concept have actually been built or tested, and no flight date or technical specifications for Hazel have been announced. For now, the images stand as a conceptual preview rather than proof that this unusual path to space is any closer to reality.

SINGAPORE – Air travel between Singapore and Indonesia descended into confusion after Mount Anak Krakatau erupted, sending volcanic ash across western Indonesia and disrupting flights at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. According to Channel NewsAsia (CNA), conflicting airline updates left some passengers arriving at Changi Airport only to discover that their flights had been cancelled, while others in Jakarta were turned away even after clearing immigration.

At Changi, at least 19 Singapore Airlines services were cancelled on Sunday, September 6, as the eruption affected the airspace around Jakarta. Changi Airport reported 301 affected flights between 1.30am and 1.30pm, including 233 domestic services, 58 international flights and 10 cargo operations. The suspension at Soekarno-Hatta was repeatedly extended as authorities monitored the movement of the ash cloud.

For passengers, the uncertainty became almost as frustrating as the cancellations themselves. Seven-month-pregnant traveller Catrine Carina told CNA she and her husband had checked their flight information before leaving for the airport but only discovered the disruption after arriving. “We were still thinking, a two-hour flight should be fine for me, suddenly this thing happened,” she said. Her travel plans were complicated further because pregnant passengers may require a new fit-to-fly medical certificate if their departure is delayed too long.

Another traveller, Tina Seng, said a Scoot cancellation message conflicted with the Singapore Airlines app, which still displayed her flight as “confirmed.” She and her family therefore went to Changi expecting to travel to Jakarta for the September holidays. “We’re still thinking whether to continue, because we cannot predict what’s going to happen,” she told CNA.

The confusion was also evident in Jakarta. Tanzanian businessman Muhammad Akbar said he had already received his boarding pass, passed immigration and reached his gate before being told his Bangkok flight had been cancelled. “I understand there is a volcanic eruption but we need solutions,” he said, explaining that hotel, transport and other arrangements would have to be changed.

The disruption extended beyond individual flights. Reuters reported that volcanic ash affected multiple Indonesian airports, with hundreds of thousands of travellers facing cancellations and delays as authorities kept monitoring conditions.

For passengers caught between changing notices and uncertain departure times, the airport became less a gateway to their destination than a waiting room with no clear timetable.

TECH – Nvidia’s grip on China’s artificial intelligence market is facing another serious challenge as DeepSeek reportedly prepares to deploy 160,000 Huawei AI accelerators at a massive data center in Inner Mongolia. According to Wccftech, citing a Bloomberg report, the move could become one of the largest known deployments of Huawei AI chips and further strengthen China’s push to reduce its dependence on Nvidia.

The chips in question are Huawei’s next-generation Ascend 950DT processors, which DeepSeek reportedly plans to use primarily for running AI models rather than training them. The facility is being developed at roughly a 1-gigawatt scale, although the 160,000 accelerators would represent only part of its planned computing capacity. Bloomberg-based reporting also indicates that DeepSeek continues to rely on Nvidia hardware for the more demanding training workloads.

The scale of the order is striking. Wccftech estimates that 160,000 Ascend 950DT chips could be worth around $2.56 billion based on a reported price of approximately 111,000 yuan, or $16,000, per chip. Nvidia’s H20, meanwhile, has reportedly been priced between $15,000 and $25,000. The decision therefore appears to involve more than simply choosing the cheaper processor.

Huawei’s 950DT is built around the company’s DaVinci architecture and reportedly features 144GB of high-bandwidth memory, 4TB/s of memory bandwidth and a 2TB/s chip-to-chip interconnect. Huawei says its larger Atlas 950 SuperPoD can connect up to 8,192 Ascend 950DT processors, illustrating the scale of infrastructure the company is targeting.

The development also echoes comments from DeepSeek CEO Liang Wenfeng earlier this year. He argued that Huawei’s systems could perform the same tasks as Nvidia’s GB300 in terms of latency, although he acknowledged that four Huawei GPUs were needed to match one Nvidia GPU and that Huawei remained roughly two years behind.

For Nvidia, the problem is not simply performance. US export restrictions have limited which advanced processors can reach China, while Beijing has increasingly encouraged domestic alternatives. DeepSeek’s reported decision gives Huawei another major opportunity to improve its ecosystem, production scale and software compatibility.

That is why Wccftech’s report describes China as potentially becoming a “lost cause” for Nvidia. The phrase is an assessment rather than an official Nvidia position, but the direction of China’s AI hardware market is becoming increasingly difficult for the American chipmaker to ignore.

BUSINESS – Nvidia is making one of its biggest moves beyond computer chips, agreeing to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion in a deal that could reshape the open artificial intelligence ecosystem. According to Reuters, the semiconductor giant is betting that open AI models will become an increasingly important source of demand as businesses seek cheaper alternatives to proprietary systems from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Hugging Face has grown into a major meeting place for AI developers, researchers and companies. Its platform lets users discover, test, customize and share models, datasets, software libraries and applications. Nvidia said more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use the platform, alongside more than 200,000 companies. The acquisition therefore gives Nvidia something it cannot obtain simply by selling GPUs: a direct connection to a huge community building the next generation of AI software.

The timing is particularly significant because Nvidia’s largest customers are increasingly trying to reduce their dependence on its processors. Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI are among the companies developing their own AI chips, creating a potential threat to Nvidia’s dominance. Reuters reported that strengthening the open-model ecosystem could help Nvidia diversify demand and maintain its influence even if some customers shift part of their computing workloads elsewhere.

Open-weight models have also gained momentum because they can be customized and, in some cases, operated at lower costs than closed alternatives. Chinese developers such as DeepSeek and Z.ai have demonstrated how quickly open models can become competitive, adding another strategic dimension to Nvidia’s decision.

Nvidia plans to pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders, while up to $1 billion in stock-based incentives will be used to retain employees. The startup was founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf and has attracted investment from companies including Intel, AMD and Amazon.

Perhaps the most important promise is that Hugging Face will remain open. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said developers will still be able to choose their preferred models, frameworks, cloud providers and computing platforms. “NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face,” Huang wrote.

That assurance matters because Nvidia’s ownership could otherwise raise concerns about preferential treatment for its hardware. For now, the company is positioning the acquisition not simply as a purchase of an AI platform, but as a long-term bet on where AI development itself is heading.

TECH – BYD is putting its luxury electric sedan through a test that sounds more like a punishment than a routine durability check. The Yangwang U7 has completed a 30,000-kilometer endurance run in less than nine days, while undergoing more than 350 fast-charging sessions along the way. According to Mobitekno, the test was designed to demonstrate the durability of BYD’s latest Blade Battery 2.0 under unusually demanding conditions.

The test took place in Nanning, southern China, where temperatures exceeded 36°C and humidity reached as high as 80 percent. Throughout the run, the U7 maintained a cruising speed of 240 km/h, while its air conditioning remained set at 24°C. The vehicle completed the 30,000 km journey in 8 days, 19 hours, and 58 minutes, according to BYD.

What makes the result particularly interesting is the condition of the battery afterward. Despite covering 30,000 km and undergoing more than 350 flash-charging sessions, the battery reportedly retained 98.7 percent of its original capacity. That represents a measured reduction of only 1.3 percent, giving BYD a striking figure to highlight as it promotes the durability of Blade Battery 2.0.

Yangwang General Manager Hu Xiaoqing also emphasized that the test vehicle was not a specially prepared prototype. It was reportedly a standard production U7 randomly selected from a retail showroom. Hu said, “Yangwang welcomes verification and testing from all independent institutions and individuals,” signaling the company’s willingness to have the results examined beyond its own testing program.

The single endurance run was only part of the broader validation effort. Yangwang said it had deployed 758 U7 test vehicles before the model reached the market, collectively accumulating more than 10.49 million kilometers of testing. The updated U7 also offers battery options of 135.5 kWh and 150 kWh, with the larger pack providing a claimed CLTC range of up to 1,006 km.

Still, the 98.7-percent figure should be viewed as a result from this specific manufacturer-run test rather than proof of identical battery degradation in everyday driving. Even so, subjecting a production EV to extreme heat, sustained high-speed operation and hundreds of rapid charges creates a remarkably intense stress test for its battery technology.

TECH – Huawei is moving closer to the launch of its next-generation tri-fold smartphone, and newly opened pre-orders in China have revealed some of the device’s most important configurations. According to Gizmochina, the Huawei Mate XT 2 will arrive with 16GB of RAM across its entire lineup and offer storage capacities reaching an enormous 2TB, placing the experimental foldable firmly in ultra-premium territory.

The pre-order listings reveal four configurations. Buyers will be able to choose between a 16GB RAM model with 512GB of storage, a 16GB+1TB version, and another 16GB+1TB variant featuring a privacy display. At the top of the range sits a 16GB+2TB model, which combines the privacy display with a bundled stylus. The first three configurations will reportedly be available in Obsidian Black, White and Purple, while the highest-capacity version will be exclusive to Purple.

Huawei has not yet announced official pricing, but expectations are already pointing toward another expensive flagship. The original Mate XT entered the market as a luxury device, and its successor appears set to continue that positioning with unusually generous memory and storage specifications.

The Mate XT 2 also introduces a redesigned folding mechanism called the “Wing Fold” architecture. Unlike the original model’s Z-shaped structure, the new design allows its secondary panels to fold inward and protect the flexible main display when closed. Huawei has also added a dedicated external screen, allowing users to manage calls, messages, payments and other everyday tasks without unfolding the larger display.

According to Gizmochina, the company has focused heavily on symmetry and weight balance, while reducing the unfolded thickness to just 3.5mm at its thinnest point. The hinge and display structure have also reportedly been reinforced to improve durability.

Other expected features include a pill-shaped front camera cutout, possible 3D facial recognition, heart-rate monitoring and HarmonyOS 7, which is expected to introduce improved multitasking and split-screen tools for the large tri-fold display. The processor remains unconfirmed, although reports suggest Huawei could use either the Kirin 9030S or a new Kirin 9050-series chip.

Huawei is scheduled to officially unveil the Mate XT 2 on Sept. 7 in China. With 2TB of storage packed into a device that unfolds into a tablet-sized screen, the company is clearly betting that the future of smartphones may need more than just another rectangle.

SINGAPORE – A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 29-year-old man in Singapore’s Tuas area, after police responded to a late-night call for assistance along an industrial road. According to Channel NewsAsia, the victim was found lying motionless on the road and was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting an investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest within four hours.

The incident occurred at about 10.10pm on Aug. 29 along Tuas South Street 15, towards Tuas South Avenue 14. When police officers arrived, they discovered the 29-year-old man lying unresponsive on the roadway. A paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force subsequently pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police moved quickly to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. A 25-year-old man was arrested within four hours, and preliminary investigations established that he and the victim were known to each other. Authorities did not initially disclose further details about the nature of their relationship or the events that led to the fatal incident.

The Singapore Police Force said the suspect was due to face a murder charge under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code. Murder remains one of Singapore’s most serious criminal offences and carries the death penalty upon conviction. Investigations into the case are continuing as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events.

Subsequent court reporting identified the accused as Muruganathan Kathirvel, an Indian national, while the deceased was named as Raj Maheshkumar, 29. According to The Straits Times, the murder charge alleges that the accused caused the victim’s death by slashing his neck with a chopper at about 10pm on Aug. 29 along Tuas South Avenue 9. The accused appeared in court via video link, and the prosecution sought a week-long remand before the case was scheduled to return to court on Sept. 7.

Channel NewsAsia reported the case based on information released by Singapore police, emphasizing the speed of the arrest and the fact that the two men knew each other. No dialogue or direct quotation was included in the original report.

The case has now moved from the initial police investigation into the judicial process, where prosecutors and investigators will continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter in Tuas.

BUSINESS – Nvidia stunned Wall Street once again with a quarter that left analysts scrambling to keep up, adding more than $400 billion in market value on the strength of results that reassured investors AI demand isn’t slowing down anytime soon. According to CNBC, the chipmaker’s shares jumped Thursday as its revenue guidance for the current quarter signaled continued strength across its AI business.

The numbers themselves tell a striking story. Nvidia posted adjusted earnings of $2.22 per share, comfortably ahead of the roughly $2.09 analysts had penciled in, while revenue landed at $96.2 billion against expectations closer to $92.4 billion. That figure represents more than double what the company brought in during the same quarter a year earlier, when revenue sat near $46.7 billion. Data center revenue, which makes up the bulk of Nvidia’s AI-driven business, came in at $89 billion, also topping the roughly $85.7 billion Wall Street had forecast.

CEO Jensen Huang used the earnings release to frame just how dramatically the competitive landscape has shifted over the past year. “This time last year, one lab alone was driving the buildout,” he said, contrasting that with what he described as the current environment. “Today, we have a golden age of new AI labs and startups, multiple frontier labs scaling in parallel, a thriving open-model ecosystem and physical AI coming online.” He added elsewhere that AI has “reached its inflection point,” pointing to compute increasingly translating directly into revenue.

Reaction on trading desks matched the enthusiasm baked into those numbers. “The valuation today is cheap,” Siddy Jobe, senior portfolio manager at Econopolis Wealth Management, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe,” adding there was still “plenty, plenty of upside” left in the stock. Paul Meeks of Freedom Capital Markets echoed that sentiment on “Squawk Box Asia,” saying he remained bullish on both Nvidia and the wider ecosystem surrounding it.

The rebound carries extra weight given what preceded it. Chip stocks broadly had shed roughly $1 trillion in value back in July before clawing their way back, leaving investors nervous about whether the AI trade still had legs. Thursday’s results appear to have settled that question for now, restoring confidence that the artificial intelligence buildout still has considerable room to run.

TECH – Arm is making an unusually bold move in the data-center market: instead of simply licensing its processor designs to other companies, the chip designer is now introducing a complete server CPU of its own. According to Jagat Review, the Arm AGI CPU is designed specifically for modern AI data centers, where increasingly complex workloads are putting new demands on conventional server processors.

For more than three decades, Arm has primarily supplied CPU architectures that companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek turn into their own chips. The AGI CPU changes that business model by giving Arm a finished processor aimed at generative AI and agentic AI infrastructure. The shift also reflects a change in how data centers handle AI workloads. GPUs remain crucial for intensive model computation, but CPUs are increasingly responsible for the surrounding tasks, including database access, API calls, orchestration and business applications.

The AGI CPU is manufactured by TSMC using a 3nm process and can feature as many as 136 Neoverse V3 cores running at up to 3.7GHz. Arm is using a chiplet-based approach to build the processor, allowing multiple computing components to work together rather than relying on one enormous piece of silicon. At Hot Chips 2026, further technical details showed that the AGI design uses two chiplets, with each chiplet containing 70 CPU cores connected through Arm’s CMN fabric.

The scale becomes even more interesting at the rack level. A server configuration can reportedly accommodate as many as 64 AGI CPUs, creating a huge pool of Arm-based processing power for cloud and AI workloads. Jagat Review says Arm claims the platform can achieve up to twice the efficiency of comparable x86 systems, although real-world performance will depend heavily on software, workload and system configuration.

Meta is reportedly the first customer and co-developer of the processor, while OpenAI, Cloudflare and AWS have also shown interest. The AGI CPU is not intended to operate in isolation, either; it can work alongside accelerators and platforms from companies including NVIDIA, Intel and AMD.

Arm has already outlined plans for future generations of the platform, suggesting this is more than a one-off experiment. With AI infrastructure becoming increasingly heterogeneous, Arm’s decision to build complete server silicon could give data-center operators another route beyond the traditional x86 model. The server CPU battlefield just gained a rather formidable new contestant.
