Singapore Rugby Sevens 2024: New Experiences and Greater Competition

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Rugby Sevens tournament has stepped up its game this year with not only an expanded format but also an innovative stadium setup that brings fans closer to the action. At the National Stadium, an integrated moving tier system has shifted 24,000 lower-tier seats 12.7 meters closer to the pitch, offering an immersive viewing experience for thousands of rugby enthusiasts.

This remarkable engineering feat involved moving 1,500 tonnes of structure and placing these seats above the track typically used for athletics. Support structures and concrete slabs ensure stability and fill gaps in the stands, creating additional concourse areas. These seats make up nearly half of the stadium’s 55,000 capacity, transforming the venue into a rugby fan’s dream.

The Singapore Sevens 2024 kicked off on May 3, extending the tournament to three days from the usual two. Serving as the grand finale of the 2023-24 World Rugby Sevens Series, the event will determine the season’s league winners. Adding to the excitement, a new women’s competition features 12 teams competing alongside 12 men’s teams for their respective titles.

Preparing the Stadium for Action

Converting the National Stadium for this world-class event required over a week of meticulous planning and coordination. Following a packed schedule of concerts, including Taylor Swift’s sold-out performances, and other sporting events, the transformation demanded precise execution.

“We faced numerous challenges, but our experienced team ensured a seamless transition while prioritizing safety, security, and the overall experience for fans,” said Yazed Osman, group head of events at Kallang Alive Sport Management.

Promoting Women’s Rugby and Local Talent

This year’s women’s competition marks a significant milestone for rugby in Singapore. Singapore Rugby Union general manager Sidney Kumar expressed hope that the event would inspire young girls to take up the sport.

“The Singapore Sevens is a cornerstone of our rugby ecosystem,” Kumar said, highlighting the collaboration with Sport Singapore to develop high-performance programs. “In the long term, we aspire to see a Singapore team compete in the Sevens circuit.”

A Greener Pitch for Intense Matches

The tournament will feature Stadium Zoysia, a durable turf grass first introduced at the National Stadium in 2023. With its ability to last 40% longer, the grass ensures optimal playing conditions for athletes. The same turf will be used for the upcoming National School Games Rugby finals, demonstrating its versatility and quality.

Anticipation Builds for Rugby Fans

World Sevens general manager Sam Pinder described the event as a thrilling lead-up to the Paris Olympics in July. “With the stands closer to the action, fans will experience the energy and flair of the sport like never before,” he said.

This year’s Singapore Rugby Sevens promises not only intense competition but also an unforgettable experience for rugby fans worldwide.
